Aerodynamics

Grades 2 and 3
When: 2nd grade meets Wednesdays, March 1- May 31, 4:00-5:00 PM at Bach
When: 3rd grade meets Wednesdays, March 15, March 29, April 12, April 26, May 10, May 24, 4-5PM at Bach
Event Description: Build and fly paper airplanes for distance, time and accuracy. Second grade class taught with pasta bridges and barges so students will learn all three. Third grade class taught with Photon Phun.

Barges

Grade 2
Wednesdays March 1- May 31, 4:00-5:00 PM at Bach
Event Description: Participants will construct a barge using the given material that can support a cargo of the largest number of weighted objects without getting them wet. Meets with pasta bridges and aerodynamics so students will learn all three.

Back to Nature

Grades 4 and 5
Mondays March 6- May 22, 3:50-5:00 PM at Bach
Event Description: Michigan insects, where students will learn about anatomy (structure and function), life history, habitat characteristics, and the vital role they play in ecosystem health.

Circuit Wizardry

Grades 4 and 5
Saturdays March 12-May 28, 1:00-2:30 PM at an Old West Side home.

Event Description: Participants learn basic electrical circuit concepts, components, schematic reading / understanding. Design and build a simple circuit from a functional description.

Estimania

Grades 2, 3, 4, and 5

Event Description: Teams will be asked to estimate answers to questions of measurement or numerical approximation in order to solve a puzzle.

Feathered Friends

Grades 2 and 3
Mondays, March 13-May 22, 4:00 – 5:15 PM at Bach

Event Description: Participants learn bird identification by sight and sound, anatomy (structure and function), life history, and habitat characteristics of birds.

GENE-ius

Grades 4 and 5
Mondays, March 6-May 22, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Bach

Event Description: Teams will use their basic understanding of heredity, genes, DNA, and chromosomes to complete genetic puzzles like pedigrees, simple crosses, and gene/codon reading.

Gravity Racer

Grades 2 and 3
Thursdays, April 20-May 25, 6:00 – 7:00 PM at Bach

Event Description: Each team will build a vehicle and utilize gravity to reach a target.

iCompute

Grades 4 and 5
Tuesdays, March 7 to May 30, 5:30 – 6:30 PM at Bach

Event Description: Participants learn basic computing concepts, hardware and software, understanding of how computers solve problems, and how to create simple program.

In Bloom

Grades 2 and 3
Sundays, March 5-May 30, 5:30 – 6:30 PM at on Old West Side location

Event Description: Students will be tested on their knowledge of plants, including grasses, flowers, and trees.

Map Reading

Grades 2, 3, 4, and 5
Wednesdays, May 4-May 25, 3:50 – 4:45 PM at Bach

Event Description: Using various kinds of maps, students will test their map reading skills to answer geographic questions.

Mystery Architecture

Event Description: Each team is given a bag of mystery materials to build tallest structure that supports a tennis ball.

No Bones About It

Grades 2 and 3

Event Description: Students will learn about the human skeletal system: structure, function, and identification.

On Target

Grades 2, 3, 4, and 5
Sundays, April 9, April 23, April 30, May 7, May 14, May 21 from 1:00 -2:00 PM or 2:00 – 3:00 PM (based on grade) at the YMCA
Event Description: Each team will build missiles, utilizing a precision straw as the missile body. The accuracy of the missiles launched indoors at a fixed target will be tested.

Pasta Bridges

Grades 2 and 3
Wednesdays, March 1-May 31, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Bach

Event Description: Participants will build a bridge using the materials supplied (a variety of dried pasta and clay) and support a cup with as many small weights as possible. Meets with Aerodynamics and Barges so students will learn all three.

Photon Phun

Grades 2, 3, 4, and 5

Event Description: After answering questions about the properties of light, participants will use a fixed light source and movable reflectors to bounce the light to a specified target.

Potions

Grades 4 and 5
Mondays, April 10-May 22, 4:00 – 5:30 PM at Bach

Event Description: Each team will follow instructions to make a potion, demonstrating basic lab skills (e.g. weighing, measuring, transferring, and filtering materials) and familiarity with safety rules.

To Infinity and Beyond

Grades 2, 3, 4, and 5
Tuesdays, March 21-May 30, from 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Bach

Event Description: Use charts and planetarium to demonstrate understanding of solar system.

Water Rockets

Grades 3, 4, and 5
Saturdays, February 25-May 27, 9:00-10:30 AM, NE Side of U-M’s North Campus

Event Description: Students will build a rocket with the specified materials. Teams will earn points for rocket launches as well as answering questions about rocket construction and flight.

Write It, Build It

Grades 4 and 5
Fridays, April 14-May 26, 5:30 – 6:30 PM at Bach

Event Description: Two team members are shown a “picture” and write a description. In a separate room, the other team members are given the pieces of the “picture” and the written description and attempt to rebuild it.

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

Grades 4 and 5
Sundays, April 23, April 30, May 7, May 21, May 28, 1:00 – 2:00 PM at an Old West Side home

Event Description: Given a few household materials, each team will construct a cable car capable of safely carrying a ping-pong ball down a zip line. There will be a short written portion testing the physics concepts of the zip line.
